What is Vbeam®?
Vbeam® is a pulsed dye laser (PDL) system used in dermatology to treat a variety of skin conditions involving redness, visible blood vessels, or pigmentation. It works by delivering bursts of laser energy at a specific wavelength (usually 595 nm) that targets hemoglobin (the red pigment in blood), making it highly effective for vascular skin concerns.
What are the Common Conditions Treated with Vbeam®?
Common conditions treated with Vbeam® include the following:
- Rosacea and facial redness
- Spider veins and broken capillaries (telangiectasias)
- Port-wine stains and hemangiomas
- Poikiloderma (sun damage on neck/chest)
- Cherry angiomas
- Acne and acne scars
- Redness from scars or stretch marks
- Post-laser or post-surgical redness
How Does Vbeam® Work?
The Vbeam® laser works through a process called selective photothermolysis, where it emits light at a specific wavelength (595 nm) that is selectively absorbed by hemoglobin in blood vessels. This absorbed light energy is converted into heat, which gently damages and seals the targeted vessels without harming the surrounding skin. Over time, the body naturally reabsorbs these treated vessels, leading to a reduction in redness and visible vascular lesions. The system also uses a Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD) that sprays a brief cooling mist before each laser pulse to protect the skin’s surface and minimize discomfort, making the treatment both safe and effective.
What Does the Procedure for Vbeam® Involve?
The Vbeam® procedure is a quick, non-invasive laser treatment typically performed in a dermatologist’s office. During the session, the skin is first cleansed, and protective eyewear is provided. The practitioner then moves the Vbeam® handpiece over the treatment area, delivering short bursts of laser light that target blood vessels or pigmented lesions. Each pulse is accompanied by a cooling spray from the Dynamic Cooling Device™ to protect the skin and enhance comfort. Patients may feel a mild tingling or snapping sensation as the laser pulses, but discomfort is minimal. The procedure usually takes 10–30 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated, and no anesthesia or downtime is typically required.
What Does Post-Procedure Care for Vbeam® Involve?
After a Vbeam® procedure, patients may experience mild redness, swelling, or a slight warmth in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects are temporary and typically resolve within a few hours to a few days. Some patients may notice slight bruising or darkening of treated vessels, which fades naturally as the body clears them. The skin should be kept clean, moisturized, and protected from sun exposure, as it may be more sensitive following treatment. Makeup can usually be applied the next day, and most people can return to normal activities immediately. Over the following weeks, redness, visible veins, and discoloration gradually improve as the skin heals and renews.
What are the Risks of Vbeam®?
The risks of Vbeam® laser treatment are generally minimal but may include the following:
- Mild redness or swelling
- Temporary bruising or dark spots
- Slight blistering or crusting (rare)
- Temporary changes in skin pigmentation
- Increased sun sensitivity
- Rare risk of scarring if aftercare instructions are not followed
What are the Benefits of Vbeam®?
The benefits of Vbeam® laser treatment include the following:
- Effective reduction of redness, veins, and vascular lesions
- Improvement in skin tone and texture
- Minimal discomfort with built-in cooling system
- Little to no downtime after treatment
- Non-invasive and safe for most skin types
